Massachusettsin1986.[1]Thegroupdisbandedin1993inacrimonious
circumstancesbutreunitedin2004.BlackFrancis,JoeySantiago,KimDeal,
andDaveLoveringhavebeenthegroup'scontinualmembers.ThePixiesfound
onlymodestsuccessintheirhomecountry,butweresignificantlymore
successfulintheUnitedKingdomandelsewhereinEurope,althoughnever
achievingmainstreamsuccesswiththeirstudioalbums.

Theirmusic,heavilyinfluencedbypunkandsurfmusic,was,whilehighly
melodic,capableofbeingtremendouslyabrasiveatthesametime.Franciswas
thegroup'sprimarysongwriterandsingerandhadadistinctlydesperate,
yowlingdelivery.Hetypicallywrotecrypticsongsaboutoffbeatsubjects,
suchasunidentifiedflyingobjectsandsurrealism.Referencestomental
instability,violentBiblicalimagery,physicalinjury,andincestfeaturein
manyoftheband'ssongsandimagery.

Thegroupisfrequentlypositedastheimmediateforebearerofthe
alternativerockboomoftheearly1990s,thoughtheydisbandedbefore
reapinganyofthebenefitsthismighthavebroughtthem.AvowedfanKurt
Cobain'sacknowledgementofthedebtNirvanaowedtothePixies,alongwith
similartributesbyotheralternativebands,ensuredthatthePixies'
legacyandinfluencegrewsubstantiallyintheyearsfollowingtheirdemise.
